How to reduce churn in your Skool community
Nobody cancels out of nowhere. There are three quiet weeks before it, and they can be seen and reversed.

Cancelling is the last step of a long process: the member stops commenting, then stops logging in, and finally cancels. Between the first symptom and the lost payment there are usually three to six weeks. All retention work happens inside that window.
The four real causes
- No first win: they joined, achieved nothing in the first two weeks and concluded it wasn't for them.
- Unanswered question: they posted, nobody replied, and the community stopped looking useful.
- No connection: they consume content but know nobody. This is the profile that cancels without warning.
- Content exhausted: they finished the course and can't see what comes next.
The signals you can actually measure
| Signal | Risk | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 14 days inactive | Medium | Direct message with one specific question |
| 30 days inactive | High | Offer a 1:1 session or a subscription pause |
| Their thread unanswered | High | Reply within 24h and mention them |
| Never posted | Medium | Personal invite to the introductions thread |
The weekly routine
- Monday: answer every unanswered thread from the previous week.
- Wednesday: message members with 14 days of silence.
- Friday: publicly recognise three active members; recognition retains better than discounts.
Doing this by hand means going through the community thread by thread. PowerUpSkool's retention radar scans the whole community, highlights what is still unanswered in the feed and ranks members by churn risk, so the routine becomes ticking off a list.

What monthly churn is normal?
In subscription communities, 5% to 10% monthly is common. Below 5% you're doing well; above 12% the problem is usually onboarding, not content.
